My Tribute to Nanny

This is the speech I wrote and delivered at my Nanny’s funeral.

“And though she be but little, she is fierce.” As anyone who ever saw my Nanny could tell, she was noticeably small in stature. Some may have even considered her frail or fragile— that was a common misconception of which I too was guilty. But despite her physical appearance, let it be known that my nanny was undoubtedly fierce. The ferocity and grace with which she battled cancer and treatment after treatment over the past two years is incomparable. The strength she mustered up until her last breath is something I will continue trying to summon throughout the hard days to come.

But what I want everyone to remember most about our Nanny is the legacy of life and love that she has left behind. Because, above all, my nanny LOVED fiercely. I was so blessed to feel the immense love she had for our family and also to witness the love she had for others. I’ll never forget seeing her scrolling through Facebook on her iPad, constantly stopping to pray for people she didn’t even know (and who possibly weren’t even real, I mean it’s Facebook). I won’t forget the numerous times she dropped to her knees in prayer for others, regardless of where she was or who was around. How she called her waitresses by name and talked to strangers in the grocery store (sometimes for hours.) Our Nanny loved without restraint. If she bought my sister’s lunch, she would always try to give me the exact cost of whatever she spent just so I didn’t feel left out. She never ever missed a grandparents day lunch (well, except once and she felt SO guilty she bought me a new pair of shoes). She wanted to make sure that none of us ever questioned her love for us and I hope to God she knows that we never doubted it for a second.
Our Nanny was fiercely kind beyond all reason and she put everyone above herself. She constantly worried about others but never wanted anyone to worry about her in return. When she couldn’t even walk on her own and my mom brought her Grandmother’s walker, her main concern was Grandmother not having it. She used her last bit of strength on this earth to push herself up as my mom lifted her one last time, because she worried my mom would hurt her back. How is it humanly possible to be that selfless? The only answer that makes sense to me is that it’s not. I truly believe her intense love for others came from her unyielding love and faith God.
Our world is truly a darker place without her light shining on us. I will forever miss how proud she was of us, how passionate she was about our family.. I will miss her “come see me’s,” her “don’t rush off’s,” kisses that I always complained popped my ear, her clearance section Christmas gifts, her passionate Facebook posts about politics, sprygranny messages popping up on our Matriarch chat… but most of all, I will always and forever miss the love she showed me.
I hope that her memory encourages us all to try our best to make sure the people in our lives know how much we love them. I hope it serves as a constant reminder for us to strive each day to lighten up the world as she did.
Nanny, I love you so much and I am so thankful for the time we shared…. I wouldn’t take anything for it.*

*Anytime Nanny received a gift, regardless of whether it was expensive and elegant or handmade and completely lopsided, she always said, “Oh I love it! I wouldn’t take anything for it.” It became a joke in the family and we would ask her if she would take a million dollars for it, a Caribbean vacation, etc. Sometimes we would buy her gag gifts just to see if she would still say it… of course, she did. She kept and cherished every single thing we ever got her… even the XXL Hawaiian shirt I picked out for her for Christmas when I was eight.
